March Meeting recap:
March 6, 2012 - Joint Meeting with QB Historical Society and Museum. Featured speaker, Lynne Bowen spoke about her research and book "Whoever gives us bread - the story of Italians in BC". Her presentation also featured historical information on many local areas and their development. The book as a whole talks about all areas in BC, why the Italians came here, and how they helped shape the areas they worked and settled. More information on Lynne's book is available on her website www.lynnebowen.ca and more signed copies of her book are available at Mulberry Bush Bookstore if you wish to purchase one and did not get it on the night of the meeting. Thank you again to the Qualicum Beach Historical Society and Museum for hosting this year's joint meeting.
February Meeting recap:
February 15, 2012 - QBFHS Annual General Meeting, was held at 7.00 p.m., Knox United Church, Humphrey Rd, Parksville. Election of new officers - Welcome to Andrea Aitken our new Librarian and Pauline Burks our new Director at Large. The Position of Program Director is still vacant. We will email the minutes of the AGM to the membership directly.
Featured Speaker, Dr. Michael Tripp, spoke about Necrogeography: Landscapes of the Dead and gave an interesting slide show. Here is what Michael had to say about his interst in cemeteries.
Cemeteries have always been an integral part of my life, beginning in early childhood with frequent visits to an Eastern Orthodox cemetery where generations of relatives and friends were buried. What began as a duty increasingly became a source of inspiration and understanding, first within the cemetery I knew best and then well beyond its borders. Each new site brought with it revelations about the individuals within, their relations to each other, the perspectives of their times and the societies to which they belonged. Taken collectively these traits produce landscapes specific to their cultures - their necrogeographies - some discoveries and insights of which I would like to share with you.
